As of March 31, 2023, businesses are REQUIRED to self-register all business SMS users with The Campaign Registry (TCR). This ensures compliance with new regulations intended to combat fraudulent text messages sent from scammers.

The Campaign Registry is affiliated with all major cellular providers and texting services. Failing to comply will result in a disruption to your business SMS functionality.

For an industry that’s full of acronyms, here are 2 more: 10DLC stands for 10-digit long code. This is the 10-digit business phone number that you’re texting from. And A2P is Application to Person messaging, which describes SMS text messages that are sent from a business.

Business texting has been around since 2011, but has gained significant traction in the past 3 to 5 years.

But don’t be confused… this doesn’t mean sending ‘work texts’ from your personal cell number.

Business texting is where you ‘text enable’ a business phone number for the purpose of sending and receiving company-related text messages, which has many great attributes. But unfortunately, ‘bad actors’ (aka spammers) are using it in a fraudulent way, causing the need for regulation.

We use business texting at IDeACOM. And although our award-winning cloud-based VoIP providers offer the service, we subscribe through our IDeACOM vendor-partner Captivated who offers a wealth of added functionality.

At the most basic level, you can send and receive SMS text messages on – your main local phone number, your toll-free number, and your individual direct dial local phone numbers. This opens an alternate channel of communications instead of calling or emailing.

If you’re currently using or have been thinking about adding business texting, this announcement shouldn’t concern or prevent you from pursuing it. This new regulation is actually a much-needed safeguard and simply opens a new chapter in messaging.

As technology continues to evolve, let us know if you have any questions. Your IDeACOM support team is always available to assist and consult with you about keeping your company’s communications platform up to date and running smoothly.
