This is NOT voice over IP, and it’s not an IP phone system!
It’s an imposter…
Unfortunately, there are still a few manufacturers who refuse to let legacy digital phone systems fade into oblivion (which is where they belong). The value they once provided has been lost to VoIP.
In my professional opinion, these vendors are doing a huge disservice to unsuspecting and uninformed end users.
Here are some telling signs to be aware of:
- No cloud-based option is available.
- The appliance has more than 2 Ethernet ports.
- They use the term IP in the system name or model number.
- You need to equip the hybrid system chassis with VoIP network cards.
- You can re-purpose your existing 2-wire phones, or install new digital phones.
These converged “hybrid” systems have little to no future, and definitely no migration path.
True VoIP systems are either cloud-based, or they reside in a server or virtual machine that only supports phones on an Ethernet-based computer network.
So this post is to here to help you avoid a costly mistake influenced by an inexperienced or unscrupulous vendor that’s peddling outdated technology. Or worse, trying to sell off old inventory at your expense, instead of doing the right thing by cutting everyone’s losses and taking the legacy technology to the recycling plant.
Don’t be fooled. Hybrid digital phone systems are DEAD!

Here’s an excerpt from a recent article titled VoIP Market to hit $55bn by 2025: Global Market Insights, Inc.
The VoIP market is estimated to hike from USD 20 billion in 2018 to around USD 55 billion by 2025, according to a 2019 Global Market Insights, Inc. report. The VoIP market growth is due to its cost-effective way of communication compared to a broadband internet connection. The technology is rapidly replacing expensive traditional phone services as it eliminates the need to invest in massive telecom hardware equipment. Extensive internet penetration and widespread adoption of advanced unified communication platforms to support the growing business requirements will also contribute to the rising adoption of VoIP.
As the enterprises are focusing on geographic expansion, they face tremendous pressure to improve internal & external communication and collaboration among remotely dispersed workforce. This leads to the adoption of VoIP solutions including IP phones and web-based applications, which facilitate cost-effective communication. The technology enables functionalities, such as voice calling, video calling, and instant messaging, at a very low cost.
The integrated access/SIP trunking segment held a dominant share of over 52% in 2018 and will maintain its leading position in the VoIP market by 2025. To utilize the benefits of advanced communication services, enterprises make use of these platforms designed for converged voice & data services including internet access and video applications.
The phone to phone VoIP market will witness the fastest growth rate due to extensive use of IP phones enabling long-distance communication at an affordable price. IP phones offer advanced call routing compared to traditional analog phones. These systems enable enterprises to scale their communication infrastructure depending on their changing infrastructure requirements without paying for procuring costly infrastructure components.
