Held this year in Nashville, the 2025 Ideacom conference was a huge success and a great time had by all.
The Ideacom Network is one of the largest organizations in the VoIP and data industry. Members and vendor-partners from across the country met for two and a half days to collaborate, learn about the newest technologies and trends, and network.
I had the privilege to co-moderate the morning session of Mining Our Diamonds, which is our business roundtable where we share and exchange ideas and strategies that have had a significant positive impact on our clients and our business.
And of course, we all got to have a little bit of fun too…
The topic of Artificial Intelligence(AI) was front and center at this year’s conference.
And why not?
AI is revolutionizing how data is managed in your phone system and call center. From online meeting and voicemail transcription, to reporting and call recording summaries, to sentiment analysis around customer experience, it’s a hot topic!
The current flavor of generative AI is most common. But be on the lookout for agentic AI which is going to help streamline operations for so many organizations.

Stay tuned over the coming year as agentic and generative AI begin to play a more pivotal role in your phone system.
And remember, when it comes to AI, IDeACOM has your back!
Here’s a quick example of AI as if you were doing a basic Google search:
So I posed the following question to Chat GPT, “What’s the difference between agentic AI and generative AI?”
And here’s what I got back…
Great question — and it’s becoming more important as AI evolves.
🧠 Generative AI
This is the kind of AI that creates content — like text, images, music, code, etc. It’s trained on huge datasets and uses that knowledge to “generate” things based on a prompt.
- Examples: ChatGPT, DALL·E, Midjourney, GitHub Copilot
- What it does: Answers questions, writes stories, generates art, translates languages, etc.
- How it works: Mostly based on large language models (LLMs) or similar architectures that predict what comes next in a sequence.
🤖 Agentic AI
Agentic AI takes things a step further — instead of just generating, it acts. These AIs can set goals, make decisions, take actions, and operate autonomously or semi-autonomously to accomplish tasks.
- Examples: AutoGPT, BabyAGI, Devin (AI software engineer), and more emerging agent-based systems.
- What it does: Plans steps to reach a goal, uses tools (e.g., web search, APIs), evaluates its own results, loops back to improve, and may even take initiative.
- Key trait: It behaves like an agent, not just a responder. Think of it like giving an AI a mission, and it figures out how to complete it.
⚖️ In short:
Feature | Generative AI | Agentic AI |
Focus | Content generation | Goal-oriented behavior |
Initiative | Reactive (responds to prompts) | Proactive (can act on its own) |
Examples | ChatGPT, DALL·E | AutoGPT, Devin, BabyAGI |
Complexity | Medium | Higher (may involve memory, tools, loops) |
Agentic AI often uses generative AI under the hood — but it wraps that generative power in logic, planning, and sometimes a kind of pseudo-“personality” or persistence.
Want an example or demo breakdown of how one might work vs the other?
I continued but for the sake of time, we’ll continue this another time.
The interesting part is that it’s like you’re having a conversation.
But I think we’ve all heard that at this time, the information may not be 100% accurate. So you need to do your due diligence.
